Each election jurisidiction (county, city with a board of election commissioners, or the county board of election commissioners in DuPage County) selects the specific voting system for use by its voters. Voting systems are certified by both the Election Assistance Commission and the State Board of Elections (see pamphlet).

Under its rulemaking authority, the Board has adopted a rule relating to vendors supplying source code to the State Board and has proposed a rule to amend the certification of electionic voting systems.
